Taste of Finland Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Helsinki
On your arrival at Helsinki airport a driver will wait for you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name on it and will drive you to your accommodation. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
If you arrive early in Helsinki, you can dive into local flavors at the Market Square, sample innovative Finnish cuisine at trendy spots, and end the day with a delicious dinner at a renowned restaurant. If you’d like to add any additional tours or activities to your Taste of Finland package, please let us know.
Day 2: Taste and Discover Helsinki & Suomenlinna
Your Taste of Finland tour starts with a city tour of Helsinki centre and the UNESCO fortress island of Suomenlinna. This tour starts with the basics of Helsinki and Finland, takes you to taste the fresh local ingredients and ends at the beautiful fortress right in front of Helsinki. We will stop at the Old Market Hall where you can experience Finnish cuisine displayed in all its color, tastes, scents and nuances. You get to sample a few essential Finnish flavors and you have a possibility to purchase more for later. The tour continues with a 20-minute ferry ride to Suomenlinna, the no 1. attraction of Helsinki. Your guide will reveal the secrets of this mysterious place. The excursion ends on Suomenlinna Island, where you can stay as long as you wish and travel back with your ferry ticket (the one is given to you at the beginning of the tour). Please note that this is not a food tasting tour but a general tour with a couple of tastings and a market visit.
Included Meals: Breakfast, tastings
Day 3: Helsinki Food Tour
This 5-hour small group food tasting tour of Helsinki is the best way to discover what Finnish food is all about. The tour starts with a berry shot and finishes with a coffee and cake. As it turns out, Finns drink the most coffee in the world (per capita of course) so it makes perfect sense to finish the tour with tasting some of this much loved drink. During the food tour you will taste and discover Helsinki and Finland, while making about 9 different food tasting stops, including beer tasting. There’s plenty to eat so we recommend having a very light breakfast or skipping it completely.
Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Day 4: Helsinki to Turku by Train, Picnic River Cruise
It’s time to say goodbye to Helsinki and travel to Turku by train. In the morning your driver will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the railway station for your departing train. On arrival in Turku another driver is waiting for you at the station and will take you directly to your hotel in the centre of Turku.
After arrival and some free time it’s time for an 1-hour picnic cruise along Aura River. Admire the cityscape while cursing through the city centre, under bridges and past riverboats. During this time you’ll hear about the riverside sites of interest as well as the past and present of Turku’s river and maritime history. A picnic basket of tasty local delicacies is made up for you by Finland’s best bakery.
Included Meals: Breakfast, picnic
Day 5: Discover Turku
Today you will do a walking tour of Turku, the oldest town in Finland. Turku is a vibrant modern city with an 800-year history. You will be walking through the history of Finland from medieval to modern times and learn more about Finnish history, the people of Turku and their way of life. Turku has always been an international town with close trade connection to cities around the Baltic Sea. The proximity to the world’s largest archipelago and the beautiful river Aura give this town a touch of flair. You will see some of the best spots in Turku and hear about the history and current times in this beautiful city.
Free time: In the afternoon you have some free time to explore Turku and its surroundings independently. If you wish to add another tour to your Taste of Finland tour package we could suggest beer tasting in Kakola brewery. Kakola Brewing Company is the newest and coolest neighbourhood brewery in Turku. The location of the brewery is perhaps set in one of the most interesting surroundings in Finland, in the old Kakola prison. On the brewery tour you can take a peek into the life of a small brewery and see how the beer is made. Naturally, there will be plenty of opportunity to taste the delicious beer!
Included Meals: Breakfast
Day 6: Turku Gourmet Tour
This is a perfect tour for those who love life and the delicious delicacies it has to offer. During the culinary tour you will get to try some local delicacies at the Market hall. After that you will head to the lovely Qwensel Cafe for a wonderful afternoon tea. The Turku food tour will conclude at the Walo Rooftop bar and terrace where you can admire the views over the city while sipping a glass of bubbly. Duration of the gourmet tour is about 2,5 hours.
Free time: On your free time if you’d like to experience what Finnish barbecue is like we can suggest a tour to Ruissalo isalnd. The island of Ruissalo is a unique haven of nature, known for its impressive oak trees, several hundreds of years old. On the nature walk, experience the magic of the old oaks and if you’re lucky you might see woodpeckers, hares or even deer. After the nature walk you might get a bit hungry so at the seaside campfire, tasty grilled sausages and delicious marshmallows are waiting for you to enjoy. If you’d like to add this to your Taste of Finland package, please let us know.
