Which Northern Lights Tour Is Right for You?
Your first aurora trip, with the most variety
The Finland Northern Lights Tour moves through three Lapland regions in seven days and gives you five different ways to hunt the lights — from a photography tour in Rovaniemi to floating on a frozen lake under the sky. More nights in more places means more chances.
Aurora hunting with a city break
The Tromsø Northern Lights Tour pairs a lively Arctic city with fjords and the sea. Your first evening starts on a four-hour aurora cruise with a hot tub and dinner, and your last night is spent in a traditional Sámi lavvo, far from city lights.
Watching the sky from a glass-roofed cabin
The Lapland Northern Lights Getaway keeps you in one aurora cabin for four nights in the Inari–Saariselkä region, one of the darkest corners of Finnish Lapland. Three guided photography hunts are included, and breakfast and dinner are taken care of.
Stockholm and Swedish Lapland in one trip
The Sweden Winter Tour starts in Stockholm's Old Town, then takes the overnight train north to Kiruna for the Icehotel, a husky safari, Sámi reindeer herders and a guided aurora tour.
Three countries on one aurora route
The Northern Lights Road Trip links Inari, Levi, Kiruna, Abisko, Senja and Tromsø over 11 days, with five aurora tours along the way, from the forests of Finnish Lapland to the fjords of Northern Norway.
For photographers
Photography-led aurora hunts are part of our Finland Northern Lights Tour and Lapland Northern Lights Getaway. Guides help with camera settings, and many photography tours share their photos of the night with you after the trip.
What Are the Northern Lights?
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, appear when charged particles from the Sun, carried by the solar wind, collide with gases high in Earth's atmosphere. Earth's magnetic field steers these particles toward the poles, so auroras are most frequent in the auroral oval, a ring around the Arctic that passes over Finnish Lapland, northern Norway and Swedish Lapland.
Oxygen produces the familiar green glow, while nitrogen adds purple and red edges during stronger displays. Aurora activity is often measured with the Kp index, from 0 to 9. This far north, even low activity can be visible — what matters most is a dark, clear sky, which is why our guides follow the weather as closely as the aurora forecast.

Finland, Norway or Sweden: Where Should You See the Northern Lights?
All three countries lie under the auroral oval, the ring around the Arctic where auroras are most frequent. The difference is the experience around the lights:
- Finnish Lapland — snowy forests, glass cabins and Sámi culture. Rovaniemi is the easy gateway; Inari and Saariselkä in the north are quieter and darker.
- Tromsø, Norway — a coastal city surrounded by fjords and mountains, with aurora hunts by boat, car and on foot.
- Swedish Lapland — Kiruna, the Icehotel and Abisko National Park, whose mountain microclimate often keeps skies clear when the surrounding area is cloudy.

When Is the Best Time for a Northern Lights Vacation?
The aurora season in Lapland runs from late August to early April, when nights are dark enough to see the lights. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, auroras appear on roughly half of dark, clear nights in Lapland resorts such as Ylläs and Saariselkä, and on about three out of four in the far north around Kilpisjärvi.
- September–October and February–March are among the strongest months for aurora activity.
- December and January bring the longest nights and deepest snow, but also the coldest temperatures — often −15°C to −25°C, and colder during cold snaps.
- Our founder's tip: many travelers think November and December are the best aurora months, but they are often the cloudiest of the season. For better odds, choose September–October or late February–March.
- The best hours are usually between 9 pm and 1 am local time.
Our Lapland and Swedish winter tours run from December to April. [[TBC: Tromsø and Road Trip season]]
How Our Guides Hunt the Northern Lights
Seeing the aurora takes two things: activity in the sky and a gap in the clouds. Our local guides check the aurora and weather forecasts every evening and drive to wherever the sky looks clearest. Depending on your tour, you'll search for the lights:
- by minibus with a photography guide,
- on a snowmobile to a wilderness hut,
- in a reindeer sleigh through silent forest,
- on snowshoes, far from any road,
- floating on a frozen lake in a rescue suit,
- or from the deck of a boat in Tromsø's fjords.
Activities are led by English-speaking local guides. Small-group tours usually have up to 8 guests, while larger group tours cost less, and we choose the right mix for your dates, budget and availability.

Tailor-Made Northern Lights Holidays
Every MonMon Travel tour is designed by people who live and work in the Nordic region — guides, mushers, Sámi hosts and photographers. Our itineraries are starting points, not fixed group departures:
- Choose your dates — you travel when it suits you.
- Choose your comfort level — 3-, 4- or 5-star hotels, glass cabins and aurora cabins.
- Add more — extra glass-cabin nights, Tromsø or Abisko extensions, ice fishing or Sámi cultural experiences.
Are the Northern Lights Guaranteed?
The aurora is a natural phenomenon that depends on solar activity and clear skies, so no one can promise a display on a given night. What we can do is put the odds on your side: our tours include aurora hunts on several different nights, in places with little light pollution, led by guides who move with the weather. We recommend at least three to four nights in the aurora zone.
Keep your expectations real. The huge, colorful displays you see on social media happen only a few times a month. On most nights, the aurora is a soft green arc that your camera picks up more clearly than your eyes. As our founder Moonika, who has spent three winters living in Rovaniemi, often tells travelers: many people don't even realize the lights are there until they see them in a photo.
If an aurora tour is canceled because of the weather, the rescheduling and refund terms depend on the local tour provider. We always write them into your personal itinerary before you book.

Northern Lights Tours FAQ
Choose a tour with aurora hunts on several different nights. Our 7-day Finland Northern Lights Tour includes five hunts in three Lapland regions; the 6-day Tromsø tour adds a city break, fjords and a night in a Sámi lavvo.
Plan at least three to four nights in the aurora zone. Clear skies are essential, and extra nights give the clouds time to pass. All our tours include aurora hunts on more than one evening.
September–October and February–March are among the strongest months for aurora activity, and March adds comfortable winter temperatures and reliable snow. December and January offer the longest nights but the coldest weather.
Our multi-day northern lights tours start from €2,225 per person for 6 days in Tromsø and €2,825 for 7 days in Finnish Lapland, based on double occupancy. International flights are not included.
No. Packages include accommodation, transfers, breakfast, guided aurora tours and the listed activities. International flights, travel insurance and winter gear rental are extra.
All three lie under the auroral oval. Finnish Lapland suits travelers who want forests and glass cabins, Tromsø combines city life and fjords, and Swedish Lapland pairs well with a few days in Stockholm.
The aurora depends on solar activity and clear skies, so no one can promise a display. Our guides check forecasts every evening and drive to the clearest skies. Any provider-specific terms, such as a second tour on another night, are written into your personal itinerary.
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point — choose your dates and hotel level, and add extensions such as Tromsø, Abisko or extra nights in a glass cabin.
The earlier, the better. December sells out first, and glass cabins and igloos are often fully booked early in every month of the season, so we recommend planning several months ahead.
Most travelers fly via Helsinki, Stockholm or Oslo and connect to Rovaniemi, Ivalo, Kiruna or Tromsø. From Helsinki, you can also take the overnight train to Rovaniemi — the most sustainable way north.
